The honest answer

If you've Googled "website cost South Africa" and found answers ranging from R500 to R200,000, you're not imagining it - the range really is that wide. But that doesn't mean pricing is arbitrary. Here's how it actually breaks down.

What drives website pricing?

Three things determine what a website costs: how many pages it has, how custom the design is, and what functionality it needs. A 5-page business site with a contact form is a very different project to a 200-product e-commerce store with payment integration and inventory management.

The main tiers

DIY website builders (R0–R500/month): Wix, Squarespace and similar platforms let anyone drag and drop a website together. They look decent, but you're renting the platform - you don't own the site, and they're difficult to rank on Google. Fine for a hobby or very early-stage business, but not a long-term solution for a serious operation.

Freelancer / small agency (R1,500–R15,000): This is where most small South African businesses land. A proper freelancer or small agency will build you a custom site on WordPress, Shopify or a modern framework. At the lower end (R1,500–R5,000) expect a clean, functional 2–5 page site. At the upper end (R8,000–R15,000) you get more pages, better design, SEO foundation, integrations and more polish.

Mid-tier agency (R15,000–R80,000): Full-service agencies with teams, account managers and processes. More overhead means higher prices. Good for larger businesses who need ongoing support and strategy, not just a website.

Enterprise / custom software (R80,000+): Large-scale custom platforms, e-commerce with complex logic, ERPs, customer portals. These are software engineering projects, not websites.

What about e-commerce?

A basic online store in South Africa typically starts around R3,500–R5,000 for a simple setup with manual EFT payments and up to 20 products. A full Shopify build with payment gateway, shipping rules, customer accounts and proper product management starts around R12,000 and up.

What should you actually pay?

For most small South African businesses - a service provider, restaurant, charter operation, transport company, medical practice - a budget of R3,500–R8,000 should get you a solid, professional website that loads fast, looks great and can rank on Google. Don't underpay (R500 sites are usually worthless) and don't overpay (you don't need a R50,000 site if you're a small local business).

What's included vs extra?

Always ask what's included. Key things to check: Does it include hosting? For how long? Does it include the domain? SSL certificate? SEO setup? How many rounds of revisions? Who owns the site when it's done?

At Something Fishy Designs, all our packages (except the basic landing page) include a free .co.za domain for the first year, one month of hosting, SSL, and mobile-responsive design as standard. No hidden costs.

The bottom line

A good website is an investment that pays back over time through enquiries, bookings and credibility. The question isn't just "how much does it cost" - it's "how much business will I lose without one?"
